With a commanding view of Mount Fuji, it's little wonder that the Port of Shimizu is called one of the three most beautiful harbors in Japan. What truly awes visitors to Shimizu, however, is not the beauty of nature, but that of its people. The local citizens never fail to give incoming passenger ships a heartfelt welcome, whether that be with exciting performances, tastes of traditional Japanese culture, or other fun programs. Though the passengers' visit to Shimizu may be temporary, their smiles and memories are permanent.

The Chikyu is the world’s first scientific exploration vessel equipped with a drilling riser, capable of drilling at a further depth than any of its peers to date. The ship has participated in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program since 2007 and the International Ocean Discovery Program since 2013. The Port of Shimizu serves as this ship's base for preparations and restocking for expeditions.
